As long we do not run out of disk space: Please upload photos in the original large size and good quality. We know it takes a bit longer but please consider this:
- We have longterm goals. The web is developing really fast. What seems large now might look small in a few years. Right now we are working on very cool slideshow where you can view photos in fullscreen mode.
- Streetfiles can be your online photo backup. Our harddisks are mirrored (raid). If one fails, the others take over. We also do backups. Do you have something like that at home?
- Photo sharing! Allow other Streetfiles members to download your hi-res photos. Download hi-res photos from others. Here is how to do that.
And: Yes we will also update the photo uploading process soon.
Hallo Streetfiles Team,

Early Sunday (2008-11-30) about 1:15 o’clock (CET) our server monitoring system (nagios) wrote me a sms claiming that our servers a probably down. Streetfiles is one of the first websites on our selfmade hosting system called MISH (by fortrabbit). Actually Streetfiles is the first big beta tester while the MISH system is still in development. That’s why like such mistakes right now so we can learn to avoid them in the future. Well and as i was partying and drinking i didn’t cared about that sms much.
The next morning began with a little hangover. Thankfully our special server rescue team was already in the data center taking care of it. So at about 11:00 o’clock the servers where up and running again.
So, we apologize for the downtime.
Something went wrong! You need to upgrade your Flash Player
Here is a little screencast about some not so well known Streetfiles features:
The first part shows you: How to view photos large and even download the original size. The second part demonstrates: How to set privacy and licence for your own photos and control who can download them.
The elbow-toe photo used in this little tutorial is by luna park. The photo is published on Streetfiles with “all rights reserved”. Thats why i had to ask before using it here.

You might noticed the bad performance of the streetfiles during the last weeks, specially in the evening hours (CET). So let me explain:
Most of you must be very addicted to Streetfiles :-). Thousands of photos were served each day (~15 GigaByte) and hundreds of comments were written. Each day the number of new members, photos, friend relations, bookmarks, loves and hates grows. We are very happy about it, but it becomes a fulltime job (for me) to optimize and tweak the application behind Streetfiles.
It’s a daily challenge to keep the system running. So don’t worry if it’s slow sometimes - we do our best to put up a good fight.
Caution all you buffers! Buffing Graffiti can be illegal too. In New Orleans (USA) an anti graffiti activist got arrested for overpainting a graffiti wall. Read the whole story here (via grandgood.com).

We never worked a day in our lives.
Streetfiles makes a lot of fun to us but also costs a whole lot of time. Beside surfin Streetfiles each day we also discuss problems and features, fix bugs, write blog entries and develop the system.
Well and you know money does not grow on trees. Either we have to go back to our clients and build websites for others and neglect Streetfiles or we get some money back from this. (Our secret plan is to get millonaire from graffiti). At least it would be really cool if we could pay the growing server costs and the rent for our office.
So here are the bad news for you:
You have noticed the ad banner on the right side. They are still in the beta testing phase. None of them is paid now. We need to change this. We also might add a banner here or there but not on your personal member pages.
In the near future you will find a ’shop’ button in the main navigation in the right top corner and also some ‘features’ in lists
On the product pages (mostly books) you will find affiliate links to amazon (and hopfully some other partners soon). If you buy something on a partner website we will get a little commission. There are no additional costs for you.
We will also have a list of street stores where you will able to find a graffiti supply store in your area or the spot you are planing to visit. Graff store owners have the opportunity to have there stores displayed here in very cool style if the pay a little extra.
Thats’s the deal. We really hope you understand theses moves. We are curious what you think. Drop us a comment.
